This piece for advanced choir explores philosopher and theologian Paul Tillich's method of correlation, in which the symbols of Christian revelation serve as answers to the problems raised by the questions of human existence. The piece begins thick and atonal, but slowly becomes more clear as the piece progresses.

The text of this piece, by T. S. Eliot, speaks of beginnings and endings and their circular relationship. Musically, this is mimicked through palindromes, both on small and large scales. An ancient feel permeates the piece through the use of open fifths.

The music correspondingly moves through moments of bleak melancholy and joyful triumph. This piece contrasts nicely with any piece espousing the joy of eternity. A Free Man's Worship was a finalist in the 2015 Kromátika International Competition of Choral Composition.

          Mass Choir and Orchestra, 30'00"; 2013-2014

         

Star Death is intended to be a companion piece to Gustav Holst's The Planets in the fashion of a short oratorio. Star Death is much more of a choral feature, and also calls for baritone and soprano soloists. This piece follows the life cycle of a star from nebula to black hole, and served as my dissertation piece, which passed with honors. With soaring melodies, energetic chanting, and a healthy dose of other-worldly octatonicism, Star Death will be a delight for both your performers and your audience.
